A SERIES OF SEX MURDERS IN WHICH THE PERPETRATOR MAY BE EITHER A MAN OR A WOMAN -- OR BOTH -- LEADS MULDER AND SCULLY TO A RECLUSIVE RELIGIOUS SECT WHOSE BELIEFS ARE LITERALLY NOT OF THIS WORLD.
A rather plain looking girl picks up a stranger in a bar; hours later, after wild sex, he collapses and dies. While he struggles, the "girl" changes into a man and walks out of the apartment. Mulder tells Scully that three similar deaths share similar characteristics: All the victims died of hormonal overload, and the "killer" may have been male or female. Forensic evidence leads them to a remote religious community called The Kindred. There they witness a bizarre burial ritual, and Scully falls prey to the sexual allure of one of the members. When the agents close in on the sex killer,
however, they find that the Kindred's secrets are even stranger than Mulder and Scully had imagined.
Notes
The title refers to the Kindred's ability to change sexes.
The music in the disco was written by Mark Snow and was his theme music for a TV movie
called 'In the Line of Duty, Street War'.
Note the picture that Marty stands next to in the beginning. It was painted by H.R.Giger, better known as the designer of the aliens for all the "Alien" movies, as well as the alien in the movie "Species".
In this ep, the name of the community that The Kindred live in is Steveson, Massachusetts, and is probably a nod to Steveson, British Columbia, a small community often used for filming purposes.
