Message From: [email protected] (Chris Howell) Date: Tue, Jan 4, 2000, 11:57am (EST-1) To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [CenTexComm] AFD/EMS question Reply to: [email protected] support 1 is the rehab unit. it is staffed with at least one paramedic and carries full als (drugs/monitor-defib/iv's/intubation) and bls gear. it also carries specialized high-angle/trench and water rescue gear. it has a large amount of rehab supplies as rehab is it primary mission. it has 2-3 water coolers, power-aide mix and lots and lots of towels. it is sent on all box alarms to provide rehab support for afd/travis co fd. the rehab policy is to hydrate firefighters and medically evaluate them prior to him/her returning to firefighting duties (if they are not medically cleared to return to duties, they are "out-of-service" for the rest of the shift). the primary unit that support 1 runs out of is an old air force ambulance that was "given" to the city of austin by berstrom. it's a chevy box with an orange stripe instead of the regular austin ems paint scheme. the inside of the box has been reconfigured for its mission and is not capable (nor licensed) to transport patients. if the chevy box is down for repairs, they will be responding in one of the older austin ems ford ambulances (still not a transport unit although all ford are licensed to transport) support 1 also responds on all pinin's/rescues and "jumps" medical/traums calls if closer than the assigned unit.   this is not the same support 1 that you refered to. aems now has only medic units. hope that clears it up for you, chris -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2000 12:42 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [CenTexComm] AFD/EMS question From: [email protected] I heard AFD working a brush fire off of Burleson Road today. The AFD dispatcher advised Battalion 6 that EMS had Support 1 responding. I remember ages ago that Austin EMS had a Support 1 based out of the central fire station as an extra aid unit.   Is this the same unit? Or is it something different? And if it is, what is its usage?
