The following info is from the Lonely Planet "Thailand Islands and Beaches" 2000.

Thailand is divided into 76 provinces (jangwaats). The provinces are divided into districts (amphoes). The districts are divided into nakhon (areas of over 50,000 population), muang (areas of between 10,000 to 50,000 population), cities, tambons, and villages.

Provincial capitals are "amphoe muang". They take the name of the province in which they are located. For example, "muang Surat Thain" is the capital city of the Province of Surat Thain.
