Sweden Public Safety

Summary of NFPA Report on the Gothenburg Disco Fire - 63 died on 28 October 1998

Great Website that lists all Emergency Dispatch Centers and fire stations in Sweden - also has lots of photos - Sweden w1.332.telia.com

Also see the INTERNATIONAL DISPATCH SYSTEMS file on this website.

I have info somewhere about the radio systems used by the police and fire units around the Capitol City (Stockholm) - possibly it is at the INT DISP SYSTEMS file - or perhaps the telia site above has it - the city has police units in UHF, and the fire units on ?78Mhz with simplex portables on ?154mhz - also check fireradio@onelist.com or scanint@onelist.com

www.sosalarm.se has extensive info in English on the 112 Alarm Centers/SOS Centers - there are 20 SOS Centers in Sweden - they apparently dispatch fire and EMS units - transfer police calls to police call takers - nationwide corporation is owned 50% by the National Govt, 25% by County Council, and 25% by Local Govt council - ambulances have GPS

Stockholm EMS Info

Hi - I saw your post on alt.med.ems. Could you answer a quick question for me? Who provides emergency ambulance service in Stockholm?

Answer - Sure. We have a county health authority responsible for all healthcare.EMS is operated by 4 contractors (I think, its all being renegotiated now), one of them being a company owned by the health authority. There are just over 30 ambulances (32 I think) available 24 hrs in the county. Some 10 of them serve in the city area. Then we have another 6 day ambulances mainly for nonemergency work. And we have 2 EMS helicopters, one daytime and one 24 hr. There are 2 24hr paramedic units plus another 2 daytime.

This is serving a population of 1.8 million, with some 700 000 in the city area. All ambulances are EMT-I (defib,ACLS, IV, entonox, asthma spray, glucose). Paramedic units staffed with anesthetist nurses do all other procedures. Thats a quick answer - is that enough??

Are the Stockholm ambulances based at fire stations?

Answer - About 1/4 of them are. One of the contractors is in fact a regional firedept, running a separate EMS division. BTW, crossover manning is not allowed, as it is felt that EMS is a full-time profession. In some locations the contractor has rented space in a local fire station for the ambulance. For the rest, any commercial space with a garage will do. The worst we ever saw (temporarily) was a mobile home with the ambulance outside!

Q - Are all of the Stockholm area ambulances dispatched by radio dispatchers located at the Stockholm 112 Center?

Answer - Yes, there is only one ambulance dispatch center per county, with few exceptionsat the county SOS Center. Primary callout is via radio using speech pagers. Details are sent to the vehicle via the Mobitex radio data system, and appear on a paper printout known as a "slip" or "ticket".

Thanks again for your help - Peter S A - You are very welcome! Maybe you can tell me something about how Ican arrange visits and/or ride-alongs in fire/EMS in your area? I have some loose plans to visit eastern US in the not too far future. My favorites are fire rescue units and paramedic units. All the Best
