I have heard that there are some new troopers out here. A 15 minute response would be excellent, but I have hear them report that it would take them up to 45 minutes to arrive to calls. You add in all the traveling these folks do who pull the details on top of their regular schedule. You've got some tired pups out there. I haven't looked at MSP lately, but the starting pay for a VT State Trooper was less than what I am making as a Campus Security Officer. For a while there, my father (the New Marlborough Chief I mentioned in my last message) was making less than the guy who mows the graveyards.

I like what CT has done with their resident trooper program. They take someone, & say here's an office, car, & apartment/house to live in. "Be here when we need you" -- community policing at its best. This added to the regular patrol units seem to be a big help. A good number of the towns in the NW corner of CT have no police force.

Great post, thanks...... Basically I think last year there was some negative press coverage that most of the state PD staffing had been allocated to the eastern part of the state with Central & Western MAss areas severly affected... If I remembef correctly there were safety concerns because of the more than 15 minute response times that could occur both in Central & Western MA.......... However, I think that there's been quite a few new state cops assigned to the Central & Western MA areas from the last two classes BUT I think a fair number of them commute from the eastern part of MA which IMHO adds to the safety problem because you've got a guy or gal that might be commuting 200+ miles each day......... At one time I used to commute from Springfield to Lexington, MA each day & I can tell you from personal experience that it was one of the worst things that I had to do 5 days a week and on occassion 6 days a week -- I lived for my days off - and my job was in an office setting!!! Now think about it -- a trooper is in the car on an 8 to sometime 12 hour shift and then has to commute another 1.5 hrs one way (3 hrs round trip)!!!!!??? Maybe I wrong & the State PD now require troopers to live closer to their assigned station, but I don't think so!!!
