Countywide Agencies

County Sheriff - provides county jail, county dispatch center, and specialized police services (major crime investigation). The County Comm Center provides mutual aid radio messages for all public safety agencies, and operates the Ambulance to Hospital radio network (and dispatches the Barnstable Fire District and the West Barnstable Fire District + ?Mashpee PD and FD and ?Harwich FD).

Cape Cod Ambulance Service - a private agency in Yarmouth with ?12 ambulances which primarily do nonemergency transports from hospitals to nursing homes. On 463Mhz

-----------------------------------------------

US Coast Guard

Air Station Cape Cod - 4 Jayhawk helicopters + 4 HH25 Lear Jets

Motorboat Stations - Cape Cod Canal/Sandwich (has own website) + Provincetown + Chatham + Woods Hole + ?Buzzards Bay

-----------------------------------------------

Barnstable County is comprised of ?15 towns. There are no Cities, and no unincorporated areas. Each town has its own fulltime police department and fulltime (or combination) fire/ems department. Most agencies also use parttime employees. Most police depts and fire depts operate their own dispatch centers. Some towns operate combined fire/police/ems dispatch centers (Provincetown, Truro, Eastham, Wellfleet, Orleans, Brewster, Mashpee, etc.) Most agencies have migrated to the State Police 800Mhz trunked radio system in 1999. Most towns have hydrants in most areas.

Possibly - all 911 calls for Mashpee and Harwich are initially answered by the County Comm Center who then forwards the call or info to the local dispatchers (I have no idea why they are doing this). Cellular 911 calls go to the Mass State Police HQ in Framingham. All other 911 calls go to the local PSAP (1 per town except for ?Mashpee and ?Harwich)

Topography - the western end of Barnstable County is hilly with elevations from sea level to ?400 feet. The eastern end of the county is sandy with dunes up to 100 feet. Scrub pine seems to be the predominant vegetation. It doesnt burn very often - but if it gets going, it can really take off.

July 2000 - from [email protected] - On the cape we are using an 800 mhz trunked system, and most departments have set up both simulcast and cross patch systems to allow their 800 traffic to go out over low band, and vice versa. I also know that Cambridge has a 800 talkgroup set up for Metro Fire that is patched thru to the UHF. Are you sure that they haven't done this for the EMS set up also?

This system is quite effective, and until we switched all our radios over to 800 only, we used to operate without any problems. Low band portables could talk to 800 portable, and the other way around. These patches and simulcast systems are set up "behind the scenes" not as part of the console, therefore they do not experience any of the lag or delay problems.

Doesn't Britton Crosby have a great FD website somewhere? - 1/10/2000 search on Infoseek turns up nothing - Oct00 - see above for his www.CapeCodFD.com website
