100 killed in 7,000 fires in Seoul last year - While the number of fires in Seoul last year increased only marginally from 1999's figure, the number of human casualties from the blazes almost doubled, fire prevention officials at the Seoul city government said yesterday. A total of 7,058 fires occurred in the capital city last year, up about 2-percent from 6,917 in 1999. But the death toll increased by more than 96 percent to 100 from 51 in 1999. The number injuries also rose by about 20 percent to 332. Among the total of 432 people who died or were injured, 121 suffered from fires that were caused by short circuit, 83 by arson and 70 by gas leakage. 13 were also killed while playing with fires. Officials at the Fire Prevention Headquarters at City Hall attributed the increase in the number of human casualties to the almost two-fold increase in the number of casualties from arsons. Meanwhile, the fires caused losses of about 17.3 billion won ($16 million), a 27 percent increase from 13.6 billion won lost in fires in 1999, officials said. (CJS) 2001.01.04 (03Jan01)

Per Lonely Planet's "Seoul 1999" - a boulevard or a large street is known as a "no" or a "ro" in Seoul - therefore Ulchiro and Chungno are large streets - "gil" is a small street - "ga" is a section of a large street (Chongno 2-ga, Chongno 3-ga, etc) - most businesses will fax a map to customers instead of giving an address or directions because the addressing system is very poor and very imprecise - asking bystanders and police officers for directions is advised
