March 7, 1999 - Penrose CO - 25 miles SW of Colorado Springs - control burn versus Estes Model Rocket Company - 750,000 model rocket motors exploded

Allenspark CO - March 29, 1999 - landowners controlled burn takes out 2 cabins and 50 acres

Inyo Natl Forest - March 31, 1999 - 10 miles North of Independence - left over sparks from an earlier controlled burn destroyed 3 houses - a snowstorm held the fire to 2,500 acres USFS, BLM, and LA City Dept of Water and Power lands were involved - earlier control burn was set to improve habitat for mule deer

Los Angeles County CA - May 1999 - ?at Sylmar - ?400 acre controlled burn started by USFS + LA County FD at 0800 - at 2000 hours, a 40 acre escape occurred and was controlled

May 18, 1999 - Eklutna, Alaska - high winds fanned a smoldering slash pile - landowner had burned slash in late April - 300 acres lost

May ?18, 1999 - Eagle River, Alaska - another escaped burn by a private landowner

May 20, 1999 - Palmer Alaska - controlled burn by landowner escapes - 150 acres lost - gusting winds rekindled the blaze - dozens of homes evacuated - per June 1999 Wildland Firefighter

May 22, 1999 - near Willows CA - an escaped prescribed burn, which followed a timber harvest, desroyed 350 acres of timber - 340 firefighters on the job - per June 1999 Wildland Firefighter

July 2, 1999 - BLM controlled burn near Lewiston CA went bad - 30 MPH winds carried fire away - 2500 acres plus 24 homes lost (including the home of the Sheriff from Trinity County). July 8, 1999 - BLM has taken full responsibilty for all damages - around $2.5 million in property damage plus $2.5 million in suppression costs - was suppossed to be 3 CDF crews, 6 engines, and winds under 5MPH - there were zero crews, winds at 7MPH, and only 2 engines at scene (VFD) - local VFD chief says "we all make stupid mistakes sometimes - if it had been a lightning strike, the same thing might have happened and the BLM would not be paying for damges" - local Sheriff who lost a restored ?1948 Packard patrol car echoed his sentiments

July 6, 1999 - near Lakeview OR - habitat restoration crew used explosive to drop a snag into a creek - first time in history of the world, a fireball occurs - Lakeview IA Dispatch notified - initial attack crew at scene in 22 minutes - tower then spots smoke - fire under control on July 12

September 15, 1999 - near Milton FL - controlled burn escapes - jumps Interstate 10 - 300 acres of timberland lost - 10 VFDs fought this blaze which started at 1PM

Dec 24, 1999 - 1033 PM PST - At about 10 pm Tehama CDF dispatched a call for a controlled burn escape in the eastern part of the county on Serria Pacific land the first report is saying 6 to 10 acres and heavy wind blowing, they are requesting bulldozers and crews to respond, what a way to spend christmas. 151.370 Tehama-Red Bluff.

Gila NF - strange escaped fire - ?March 2000
