Fom the January 1985 isue of Fire and Water - all fire protection in Chile is provided by volunteers. 234 fire brigades have 30,000 active members. 11M people live in Chile. Valparaiso had the first FD in 1851. All areas of cities are within 5 minutes of a fire station. Stations usually have 2 pumpers or 2 pumpers and a water truck.

From the February 1985 issue of "Fire and Water" Magazine - Santiago Ladder 15 is a Magirus Deutz forward cab closed DL50 rear mount (?50 meter) - the female dispatchers of Santiago CAD dispatch the fire units of the 8 boros in the city plus suburban boros - rigs roll in 1.5 minutes - arrive around 3 minutes maximum (1.5 minute travel time) - each of 20 Engine Companies has a Pumper, a Pumper/Tanker, and a van or ambulance - the 4 Ladder Companies have aerial ladder trucks or snorkels/articulating hydraulic platforms - 1 Rescue Company (?heavy rescue) - 2,000 volunteers + 100 paid staff (drivers, dispatchers, and administrators) - 8 calls per day on average
