Section 1 - General Information

The May 1999 Providence telephone book has the following info inside the front cover - "Call 911 for all Emergencies". Then directly under this statement they list all the 7 digit emergency telephone numbers for all the area cities and towns. No explaination is given for the 7 digit numbers.

State Police - seperate phone numbers listed for each of the State Police Barracks/Stations. (They used to be called barracks when the state police slept in them about ?40 years ago.) The Blue Pages also lists the nonemergency phone number for each barrack / station.

5/99 Providence White Pages - inside front cover - under the 911 # - emergency numbers for RI State Police - Chepachet 444-1111 - Hope Valley 539-2323 - Lincoln Woods 728-2211 - Portsmouth 849-4444 - Wickford 294-3322

per Sept 1994 Westerly phone book front cover - Hope Valley Barracks Emerg # is 539-2323 for Westerly, Narragansett, and Block Island areas

-----------------------------------------------

There is no unincorporated land in Rhode Island. All land areas are part of a city or towm. There are 5 counties but they only provide limited services. Police service is provided by the RI State Police (primarily on major highways and rural areas), city PDs, and town PDs. Fire service is provided by city, town, district, and volunteer FDs. There are no regional or County FDs. Ambulance service is provided by FDs or volunteer ambulance squads. Fulltime public safety staff are used in the cities and larger towns. Smaller towns in the rural areas will have volunteer/on-call firefighters and ambulance staff. (I do not think that there are any on-call police officers - except for detectives and technicians).

All 911 calls in the state are answered at a centralized primary answering point in ?Providence. Started ops in ?1995. Calltakers at the State 911 PSAP forward calls to local dispatchers. Most departments have their own dispatchers. There is very little shared dispatching between PD and FDs, or between various municipalities. Pagers are used to alert oncall firefighters and ambulance crews.

For a detailed list of radio freqs - see the Providence Citywide website. [or www.geocities.com/45peter/RIfreqs.html - is a copy of the Prov Citywide info]

Section 5 - Providence FD

February 2001 - Question - How does Providence FD run its radio system these days? Is all dispatch and ops done on Channel 1 154.37R? Then if its a major fire, they are switched to other freqs? Answer - 154.370 is their dispatch channel. Any multi unit responses, like box alarms, still boxes, mva with multi units etc get assigned a channel, either 2 (151.220) or 3 (159.360). There is talk of setting up a new channel just for EMS, not sure if or when that might happen. Question - Does every onduty Providence firefighter have a portable radio these days? What sort of IDs do they use? Engine 1 A + B + C? Ladder 1 roof? etc? Answer - They use the A, B, C designations. A being officer, B driver, c and d jump seats.

Providence Citywide has a website with radio traffic and info from the Providence FD. I am sure that Prov FD has their own website also.
