Provincial rules do not allow firefighters to serve without pay. Most "VFDs" give their members 1 check per year in January - they are paid for hours spent on responses, training, and maintenance.
Most VFDs in the region have 7 digit phone numbers connected to their repeaters. One member with a portable radio will receive emergecny telephone calls from the public and dispatch the appropriate FD resources via radio.
