New Mexico Public Safety

Most police work in New Mexico is done by the State Police, County Sheriffs Departments, and City Police Departments. Most employees of these agencies are fulltime workers (40 hours per week).

Most fire protection is provided by local fire departments using either fulltime or on-call staff. The US Forest Service provides wildland fire protection services to the National Forests. New Mexico State Forestry has approximately 14 small pumpers to provide wildland fire service to state areas (which are mostly rangelands). The BLM protects federal rangelands.

Ambulance service is usually provided from the larger cities and towns. Ambulances are operated by fire departments, private companies, and hospitals. Helicopter ambulances fly from Albuquerque and ?Carlsbad and ?Farmington.

911 and dispatch service is provided by County Sheriffs, ?State Police, and local agencies.
