New Hampshire Public Safety
New Hampshire is divided into county, city, and town governmental units. There are very few unincorporated areas, and they are located in the far northern areas of the state.
Nearly all cities and towns operate their own police department with fulltime weekday staff. Cities usually have fulltime officers working 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The NH State Police covers the smaller towns at all other times.
Nearly all cities and towns operate their own fire departments. Cities have fulltime firefighters; towns have volunteer or call firefighters. NH State Forestry operates 12 lookout towers and 12 patrol trucks. (approx) On high fire danger days, between 1 and 3 small planes augment the fire towers with detection and direction functions. During extended extreme wildfire danger weather, airtankers and hand crews are brought in from out-of-state.
Ambulance service is usually provided by regional services. Some are volunteer/call; some are fulltime paid. ALS and BLS units exist. Boston Medflite, Worcester LifeFlite, and DART provide EMS helicopters.
For SAR operations in the White Mtns, Natl Guard helos are used in conjunction with Fish and Game resources, plus Appalachian Mtn Club members and US Forest Service staff (plus local SAR staff).

Typically, assembly occupancies are regulated by the Fire Department or (in our state) by the State Fire Marshal's Office. We promulgate a permit process which is carried out by the local fire officials. In the statute there is a requirement for semi-annual inspections of the place of assembly. Fire Prevention officers should be involved in checking these establishments on a regular basis. One additional carrot that we have is the place of assembly permit in N.H. is tied to the Liquor License. No P.O.A., no Liquor License. Our investigators work closely with Liquor Enforcment Investigators to check places. Believe me, a bar without a liquor license is like a carriage without a horse; it don't go no where!
