Michigan Public Safety

Michigan - There are large amounts of unincorporated lands in Michigan. Police service is primarily provided by the Michigan State Police (rural areas and larger highways), county sheriff departments, and local police departments (city + village + township). Several areas have Public Safety Officers (police officers who also fight fires). Fire protection is provided by city, village, and township fire departments. Wildfires are fought by Michigan State Forestry, US Forest Service, and local FD units. Ambulance service is provided by private and public ambulances (mostly local volunteer organizations - some are augmented by police paramedics). Helicopter ambulances are flown from ?hospitals in ?Detroit, Ann Arbor, ?Flint, ?Lansing, and ?? (see the alec buck website).

In rural areas, 911 comm centers are located in the county seats (at the county sheriff office or county courthouse). In suburban and city areas, 911 comm centers are located at local police stations or 911 centers. Mosts FDs and ambos are dispatched by 911 comm centers or police dispatchers. (Or perhaps more acurately, they are dispatched by 911 dispatchers who are located in local police stations).

As far as I know, there are no county fire departments nor county ambulance services in Michigan.

Note that the Michigan State police and the Berrien county sheriff now operate on the MPSCS system, the state's digital trunked (APCO-25) system. A tax millage is on the ballot for November for the rest of the county police departments, along with all fire and ems. If that passes, it will get real boring around here. I guess I'll just put my antenna up higher.
