State Police Air Wing Info - July 2000

The Mass State Police Air Wing (from what I have read) has 3 active helos - Here are the conclusions that I have drawn from the Tail Numbers (in pictures and articles) that I saw on MSP and News Article websites on both the new helos and NTSB report one of the AS-350B Eurocopters that crashed in 1995.

The Current MSP Air Wing - Westover ARB- "Air Base Westover" - Norwood Airport "Air Base Norwood" - Including the Helipad at Framingham SP General Headquarters ("G-HQ") - N822PP- "AIR 1" (or vice versa) New AS-355N Eurocopter Twin Star (the brand new ones, with FLIR, TV uplink/downlink, rescue supplies, etc.) N823JM- "AIR 2" (or vice versa) New AS-355N Eurocopter Twin Star N821SP- "AIR 3" Older AS-350B Eurocopter (basically the new one without most of the new high-tech toys. I assume this is "AIR 3" because of the similarities and the possibility that it could be upgraded to the level of the new Twin Stars. Either way a 3rd Helo would make a good back-up helo if AIR 1 and AIR 2 are tied up or need to refuel. This one did have the typical MSP "navy blue/gray" paint scheme. I would assume that they repainted it to look like the 2 new Twin Stars.) + Access to at least 1? Fixed Wing aircraft of the Cessna type variety, by access, I mean they might lease, rent, or own one.

Check out this NTSB report rom the Mass. SPD fatal accident in 1995. NYC95GA060

Press Releases - came over the sme2 list on 5July00

February 21, 1999 - Massachusetts State Police Department Fulfills Safety & Power Requirements with New Eurocopter AS355N - Dallas, TX. -- The Massachusetts State Police Department has chosen a Eurocopter twin-engine AS355N to assist in daily operations which include general law enforcement and some fire and rescue missions. The Massachusetts Police Department, which operates from two locations, one at Norwood Airport and the other at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, is taking delivery of two new AS355N's on June 29, 1999. The department may acquire three more AS355N's in the future, depending upon funding. Because the department is getting into the over-water flight search and rescue business, the additional twin-engine capabilities of the AS355N are greatly appreciated.

Said Lieutenant Mike Melia, "The 355N not only increases safety, it also brings increased capability to our operations. It not only has the built-in redundancy associated with a twin-engine, but also has outstanding single-engine performance." "The helicopter's maintenance reliability is also something we considered. Because of all the positive safety and enhanced mission capabilities of the Eurocopter AS355N, we're better able to impact the quality of life here in Massachusetts," he emphasized. In addition to law enforcement and search and rescue, the department is in a new partnership with fire services to assist with water drops.

Massachusetts State Police Train In New Aircraft Grand Prairie, Texas - Nine pilots from the Massachusetts State Police are conducting training with the department's new Eurocopter AS355 Twin Stars at American Eurocopter. The training, which will run through the end of August, includes 12 hours per pilot in the new Twin Star and three hours in the AS350B2 trainer. The pilots are completing recurrency and autorotation training in the AStar. The department operates AStars among its fleet.

The two twin-engine AS355s include an SX16 Flight Sun, one of the most powerful searchlights available. Each helicopter includes 4 FM radios onboard, satellite communications and satellite navigation equipment. The helicopters also include sophisticated infrared cameras, which can transmit images in real time. The aircraft were completed in England at McAlpine Air Services Ltd., an Eurocopter affiliate, then transported to Texas for delivery and training. Both aircraft will be in operation by September. The pilots will take about six weeks to conduct their training. In the air, the pilots are receiving training with operating the searchlight, cross-country recurrency and instrument recurrency.

The cross-country training is important because Massachusetts State Police has a mutual-aid agreement with other New England states, which could require the Twin Stars to operate at multiple airports. The American Eurocopter Training Center is a comprehensive instructional unit, offering model-specific rotorcraft training courses on the entire family of Eurocopter products. The Training Center is at the American Eurocopter facility, located about 12 miles south of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Texas. Its location in North Central Texas allows for more than 300 sunny days for flight training. Thousands of civil and parapublic students have been trained by the American Eurocopter Training Center over the last 20 years. The Center has been recently updated, with state-of-the-art classrooms and facilities.
