Al HoytLast Updated: Wed Aug 25 8:23:42 1999 About the Plymouth Fire Dept. Plymouth Fire Dept. proudly protects 50,000 people living in an area of 104 square miles. We operate out of 6 stations that protect a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a paid status. Plymouth Fire serves a mixture of areas including rural residential , industrial, urban and city. The community contains over 360 ponds, 20 miles of ocean coastline, and 22 miles of divided limited access highway. The town is also a tourist destination with a significant increase in summer population related to tourism. Plymouth also experiences significant forest/brush fire activity each year, with most large forest fires occurring in the early spring. ALS Ambulance Service is provided by AMR inc. with 3 primary ALS units dispatched out of PFD stations 2, 5 & 6. AMR provides an additional backup BLS and ALS unit out of their local quarters. AMR provided 3,846 emergency responses in 1998. David Montenari (Firefighter) Died at age 48 on August,25 1979 while on duty Davd died fighting a fire in a warehouse on the site of what is now the Citizens Bank. Herbert R.Benton (Firefighter) Died at age 38 on May 4, 1937 while on duty Killed when trapped by a wind shift at a forest fire in the Pine Hills. James H. Devitt (Firefighter) Died at age 20 on May 4,1937 while on duty Killed when trapped by a wind shift at a forest fire in the Pine Hills. Joseph B. Sylvia (Smoke Jumper) Died at age 25 on August 6, 1949 while on duty Joseph was a World War II veteran of the US Marine Corps. Died of Injuries received at the Mann Gulch Fire, Helena Montana, August 6, 1949.
