Countywide Info

Middlesex County is divided into cities and towns. There are no unicorporated areas in Middlesex County. Each city and town operates its own police and fire departments. Public emergency "911" ambulance service is usually provided by the fire departments, or by private companies under contract to the municipality. Most police departments in Middlesex County use full time officers and provide coverage 7 days a week - 24 hours per day. Some of the smaller towns, such as Dunstable, Carlisle, and Boxboro may route their early AM police calls to the State Police.

Mutual aid is heavily used among all agencies, especially for large scale incidents. Fire mutual aid is coordinated by Mutual Aid Control Centers at the Natick FD HQ and the Chelmsford FD HQ. Generally speaking, most fire mutual aid is preplanned based on the box alarm system. Police mutual aid is conducted on a adhoc basis amongst police agencies. By state law, every EMS provider must have a written agreement with at least one backup EMS provider.
