Hampshire County Public Safety

Police Service - per www.capitolimpact.com - apparently every town in Hampshire County has its own police department - I would bet that some of the smaller ones have only 1 cop - and he probably only works weekdays - at other times, the State Police will respond to calls in the smaller towns

Family left homeless after Granby fire - Wednesday, November 1, 2000 - By NATALIA E. ARBULU

GRANBY An Aldrich Street family is homeless after an early morning fire destroyed part of their house. Firefighters responded to the call yesterday at 1:22 a.m. and spent 35 minutes extinguishing the fire at 68 Aldrich Street.

The fire, which began in the cellar, consumed bedrooms on the house's first and second floors, fire Chief Denis Houle said. No injuries were reported. Homeowners Michael P. and Robyn R. Sheridan, and their daughters Kelly, 12, and Kate, 10, were asleep in their bedrooms when the fire began, Houle said. Kate, whose first-floor bedroom is located above the cellar, heard the cellar's smoke detector go off and alerted her father, Houle said.

"If it was not for the keen ears of the 10-year-old (Kate), we could've had a fatality," Houle said.

The family's two-story Dutch colonial house received severe smoke and fire damage. Twenty-two Granby firefighters and 10 from South Hadley Fire District 2 were at the scene.

"When we got there, there were flames showing from the bedroom window, and we called for mutual aid from South Hadley," Houle said.

Frank E. Hart, a state trooper assigned to the state fire marshal's office, said the fire is not suspicious. Although its cause is still under investigation, the fire appears to have been caused by an electrical problem, officials said. The structure of the house was destroyed in some areas, and Houle estimated the damage at $60,000.

A team from Action Fire Restoration, a company based in Chicopee, was preparing to begin packing and cleaning the house yesterday afternoon. Nancy J. LaFrancis, an administrative assistant with the company, said the family could not occupy the house for another six to eight weeks. "They are staying with family in South Hadley and trying to cope," she said. "This is a horrendous thing to go through," The Granby Fire Department recently completed its fire safety awareness programs within the school district.

"Who would have thought they would have had to use that information that quickly," said East Meadow School Principal James J. Pietras, where both girls are students.

Fourth-grader Kate attended school yesterday, while sixth-grader Kelly chose to help her family, Pietras said.

Houle plans to nominate Kate for the state's Student Awareness of Fire Education award. "She saved her family's life," he said.
