EMS - New Bedford PD responds to all medical calls. However, that was before the FD decided to become first responders. City EMS units (ALS - transporting) are dispatched and operate on the PD frequencies. Cruisers used to have first aid kits, including oxygen tanks and at least one, usually two officers would respond along with the EMS crew. PD is being equipped with SAEDs. Sept 2000

June 2000 - note on FD radio usage - Up until about two years ago, we called every piece of apparatus we had "truck." We didn't have an aerial, either (got our first one last month, actually). Six engines and three brush trucks all called "truck," with the exception of our heavy rescue, which was called "rescue." Supposedly, the naming goes back to the mid 1950s when we first got a radio system. The dispatcher was the chief's wife, who was apparently hard of hearing. There were multiple towns on our frequency [153.95] (we still share with 3 other towns), and they all called their units "engines" or "ladders." We called our pieces "trucks" since it sounded much different, so the dispatcher could tell the difference. The tradition (there's that T word again...) held for years. It was changed a few years ago to "Engines," "Forestry," and "Special Hazards" (the rescue....back to the heavy rescue/ambulance problem). Now we've got the ladder, but its called "Ladder" not truck. I don't see us going back to truck anytime soon.
