Question - Can I run a quick question by you. When San Diego Fire dispatches a call, they assign 2 talkgroups - right? Do they really use 2 talkgroups for every call? Or is it like 1 talkgroup for talking, and 1 talkgroup for the IC if it is a major incident? Can you briefly explain how they do things?
Answer - They assign a Command channel, and a Tac channel. Command is where the Batallion Chief lets Dispatch know what's happening. The Tac is for on-scene comms between units. They actually have 2 extra tac channels (3 total) for each command channel, if they need them.

Hi all, Just in case you didn't see the San Diego news last night, San Diego Fire Dept. has received a loan of a Bell 407 Type 3 helo for one month. The ship comes equipped with a belly tank, and I'm sure snorkel. The radio callsign will be Helo 1. It will be supported by several engines throughout the city, I believe Engine 37, Engine 7 and Engine 6. It's on loan from a company called Air Resources which is owned by a great guy named Chuck McFarland. Chuck's a former ground pounder who decided some years ago to start a helo business. the idea here is to attract corporate sponsorship for a Type 3 ship here in the city, namely a Bell 212. Now all we need is a Santa Ana or three in November to prove how badly we need it! 27Oct00
