Daria OíNeil: (in the background) I have to put you on hold. (Laughing) I was just chatting with him.
Bill: Is he on the guest line there?
Daria: I was just chatting with him.
Bill: Stephan Jenkins.
Stephan: Hello.
Bill: Hi.
Stephan: Hi
Bill: Welcome to the Prescott show with Daria and Marconi and Stop It í99. How are you?
Stephan: Uh, thank you. Thanks for having me. And -I hope my mom is listening.
Daria: I hope so, too.
Stephan: Can I send a shot out to my mom?
Daria: Please do so.
Stephan: Mom!! Hi mom. (Pause, then laughs)
Bill: (Laughing) Sorry I havenít called, Mom.
Daria: Brilliant. Listen, Stephan. This is actually sort of
appropriate time to ask you this question that Iíd been wanting to ask you anyway.
Stephan: Go, Daria.
Daria: Being that this is "Save Our Youth" time. This is an
organization that we're doing all for the next 27 hours for charity to educate kids about violence.
Stephan: Ah.
Daria: And, you have this new song. You know what song Iím talking about, right? "Slow Motion".
Stephan: Yes.
Daria: I wonder if you could talk a little bit about that. Because I think thatÖhereís what I understand about the song so far. It was either going to be on Blue, which comes out November 23rd--
Stephan: That's right.
Daria: But you guys decided to either change it or not add it in light of the whole gun craziness that's been happening in our schools.
Stephan: I'm so glad that you asked me about that. The song is called "Slow Motion", and it was really written about three and a half years ago. But, in the context of the Columbine headlines that keep repeating themselves, the label thought that the message of the song would be misconstrued, and the entire focus of the album would be on that one song.
Daria: Whatís your opinion about that?
Stephan: I don't agree with that. Um, but-
Bill: You can get outvoted by the label.
Stephan: What's that?
Bill: You can get outvoted by the label sometimes.
Stephan: No, we weren't outvoted by them. Actually, we can't get outvoted by the label, luckily. But what we agreed to do is put "Slow Motion" out with the lyrics on another record. That will be coming out, I guess in a few- I don't know. Soon. Sort of an EP we'll be making.
Daria: Excellent.
Stephan: Um, so people will get to hear it with the lyrics and sort of decide for themselves.
Daria: On that new album, will you be thanking Charleton Heston in the liner notes?
Stephan: You know, Charleton Heston really he is the biggestÖhe is the most well spoken idiot I have ever heard. The guy sounds brilliant, and he has no idea what the Constitution of the United States actually means.
Daria: Stephan, you donít seem to understand! The American Revolution happened once. It can happen again!
Stephan: The British are not coming
Daria: They might very well! We've got our tea ready to dump, and we've got to have our guns to be ready for the redcoats when they come back!
Bill: I'm more worried about the French.
Stephan: Yeah, exactly. So that the song, and itís reallyÖthe song sort of deals with an ironic comment on how we as a consumer society always glamorize gun violence and suffering. But itís done in a very guess you would say it's not very didactic.
Daria: So, are you worried then that people won't catch the irony at all?
Stephan: Iím not worried that our fans won't. Because I think that I've never talked down to our people at all. But other people are worried that they will, so thatís that. But, thereís an instrumental version of the song on the record. Um, itís very purdy, and people will be able to hear "Slow Motion" with the lyrics soon, certainly in concert.
Daria: So, is that as of yet untitled? The forthcoming, I think itís an 8-song album? The EP thatís going to have that on it?
Stephan: Oh no. We're going to call it Black.
Daria: You are?
Stephan: Yeah
Daria: Excellent. So Blue is coming out in just a couple of days here. November 23rd. Then, Black will be out following that date.
Stephan: But Black, of course, is just an EP.
Daria: Excellent. So, Stephan when can we see you here in town again?
Stephan: (pause) Daria honey, you can see me anytime, Girl! (laughter in background).
Daria: (laughing) When can we see Third Eye Blind performing again in Portland?
Stephan: Um. I have to come visit my mom and she lives in Portland.
Daria: Just do a little show when you're here.
Bill: Even a puppet show.
Stephan: Do a little dance? Dance around on tables for you?
Daria: A little somethin', yeah.
Bill: I saw you open for the Stones. That was very cool.
Stephan: You did?
Bill: Uh-huh. At the King Dome.
Stephan: Um- where that was the show up in ummm-
Bill: Up in Seattle.
Stephan: Up in Seattle. Yeah. We had a really good time there.
Bill: How can you not? How can it suck to open for the Stones?
Stephan: Well, it's certainly a corporate venture.
Bill: Unless Mick comes out and goes: (in British accent) "well, Stephan, I really don't want you taking up that much space on the stage. And, your dressing room is really too large, and we must put you in a smaller one"
Daria: Heís doing Mick Jagger gestures as well. You really have to visualize this.
Bill: Were they nice to you? Did they leave you alone?
Stephan: Mick Jagger talks with - he's developed sort of an upper crust British accent. You know where the teeth sound like they're too big.
Bill: And heís getting crusty.
Daria: The teeth are too big, Stephan.
Stephan: (impersonating Mick Jagger) "Hello, Stephan. Did y enjoy it?"
Bill: (also impersonating Mick Jagger) "May I rub your buttocks?"
Stephan: So, it was fun.
Bill: Yeah. We have to scoot.
Daria: Before we go, I have one quick question to ask you. Did you ever get what I sent you a little Christmas present Christmas before last. Did you ever receive that?
Stephan: Not only, Daria, did I get it-but I used it.
Daria: I'm so glad!
Stephan: You naughty, naughty girl.
Bill: What was it? A sex toy?
Daria: No, no. It was a token of love.
Stephan: (laughing) (in British accent) She's a naughty, naughty girl.
Bill: What was it?
Stephan: Um, people don't know this because Daria's just a voice on the radio, so I will tell the good people of Portland now.
Bill: She does a TV show three nights a week too.
Stephan: Oh really? She's purdy!
Daria: Stephan, Iím a weather girl now.
Stephan: Are you really? (Sounding excited) Are you a weather girl?
Daria: Oh yes.
Stephan: Ohhhhh, God! That's just obscene, Daria.
Daria: Cloudy with a chance of love.
Bill: Makes you wish you had cable, doesn't it?
Daria: What happened was I had an interview with Stephan and he talked about spanking, and he was getting very, very provocative and naughty. So, I sent him a little device to use.
Stephan: Actually, we were talking about how you handle all the girls on the road.
Bill: You?
Stephan: And I said in this day and age, the best thing to do is spanking. It's good clean fun, right?
Bill: Mmm-hmm!
Stephan: And then we discussed the details and the mechanics of spanking.
Bill: Mmmmmm.
Stephan: And, um-can we just tell them?
Daria: Sure, sure.
Bill: Please.
Stephan: So, as a Christmas present, Daria sent me a finely crafted, leather spanking paddle. That's right.
Daria: It was beautiful. It was a work of art.
Stephan: It was. And it makes an incredible thwack sound. And I've never fortgotten it.
Daria: And I'm so glad. Okay, we love you very much, Stephan.
