Arizona GOODYEAR-BASED AZCON CONCRETE, Goodyear: Daniel Powell's (33) caution put him directly in the path of a tractor-trailer coming up from behind and, his family says, likely saved the lives of the students on a school bus. Powell steered his empty cement truck behind a school bus, patiently waiting as the bus stopped to pick up students along a meandering western Arizona highway. He never tried to pass the bus. Instead, he parked at every bus stop and left a wide cushion between his truck and the school bus. A truck hauling pipes struck Powell's vehicle, flipped it on its side and crushed Powell. He died at the scene. Reports said it's likely the tractor-trailer would have struck the school bus if Powell's cement truck had not been there. No Salome High School students on the school bus were injured. MEMORY PAGE. 09/24/2008

ArchivesPLEASE NOTE that the 2safeschools archives do not cover all the school bus related deaths in those years. A yearly sampling is provided for instructors and bus drivers to use in updating training and policy development. 1450 people were killed in school bus related accidents from 1990 through 2005. Of these fatal accident victims, 67 percent were the occupants of other vehicles involved in the school bus accident, 25 percent were pedestrians or bicyclists, and nine percent were passengers in school bus-type vehicles. 40 school bus drivers have died in bus crashes between 1993 and 2003. Hundreds of children have died over the past decade, students who were in the process of going to and from their bus stop, getting on or off their bus or while riding their school bus. Over 400 children the past twenty years have been run over by their own school bus at their bus stop. Information and memory links are collected and added to the archives as found by 2safeschools members or provided by helpful visitors. In Loving Memory Submission Page n/a
